The primeval forest meets meandering roads that cross water and islands. Traditional red cottages and fences. Primroses and day-old lambs dappling the blossoming meadows. Bees buzzing in lush fruit trees – biodiversity and the scent of paradise.

People have been growing apples forever in southern Småland, around Lake Åsnen. Generation after generation haspainstakingly tended the trees that grow in orchards, on meadows and on hillsides sloping toward the lake.

The scenery is characterized by the sparseness of Småland. To take advantage of what little arable land was available, fruit trees were planted on meadows and fields. As a result, the land could be used on two levels: fruit from the trees and hay from the land.

Hard work lies behind each apple tree. Winter pruning, grafting and finally, the harvest. Pruning is an artform, a passed-down legacy. Too little thinning and the apples will be small. Too much and they will be big, but few.

The optimal growing place impacts how the apples taste. Every ingredient for the apples’ terroir can be found around Lake Åsnen; together, a beneficial microclimate and soil create tasty harvests.

Astrakan, Gravenstein and Aroma are some of the many varieties of apples grown in the region and used locally to make apple cider and delicacies at fine restaurants.

In the nineteenth century, the region was one of the country’s most significant apple districts. Today, the area is unique: it is Sweden’s last cohesive agricultural area where fruit trees are grown in meadows.

In Småland, nothing is taken for granted and thriftiness and using what nature has to offer parsimoniously is still deeply rooted in our way of thinking. Through Fabrikant, we continue the legacy by producing sustainable steel products made to last using great professional skills.

Fabrikant’s products live on as long as there are stories to tell.

For the photo shoot, we looked for a place in our region that, together with our products, could tell the story of our roots – the motivations of past generations to make the impossible possible.
